A brief description of how representative samples were reached (if applicable) and how the cultural assessment is administered:

The survey is administered through a random sampling of students, faculty, and staff provided by the Office of Institutional Research and Planning. This random sampling ensures that we do not reach only poeple in certain departments or colleges. After receiving the random sampling, each person was emailed a link to the Qualtrics survey to complete.

A brief summary of results from the cultural assessment:

UNCW students generally think sustainability is important to their lives. Over time, we have seen that the major priorities are natural area preservation, clean energy installation, and waste minimization. In 2023, we found that the three top priorities were waste diversion, energy efficiency, and water conservation as the most important for the university to take part in. In terms of sustainable practices, the respondents tend to participate in energy conservation methods, water conservation, and waste reduction the most. The majority of respondents reported using a single-occupancy vehicle to get to and from campus, emphasizing the need for more accessible alternative transportation. 46% of respondents said they had not taken a single course at UNCW that presented any topics discussed in the survey. This result emphasizes the need to interdisciplinary courses that introduce sustainability topics. This is the first year that we have asked this question, and it will be interesting to see how this data changes over time through the expansion of the sustainability minor program.
