Campus Race 2 Zero Waste

A brief description of the campaign:

Campus Race to Zero Waste – formerly known as RecycleMania – is the nation's premier waste reduction and recycling competition among colleges and universities, managed by National Wildlife Federation, and governed by RecycleMania, Inc. Information about this program was dispersed to students, employees, and community through the UNCW Recycling website, social media platforms, the UNCW New Employees Microsoft Teams group, the UNCW Staff newsletter SWOOP, and on campus TV advertising screens.


A brief description of the measured positive impact(s) of the campaign:

Campus Race to Zero Waste brings awareness of where students, faculty and staff can recycle on campus and what materials can be recycled. Through promotional materials, programs and waste audits the message of the importance of recycling is spread to each department on campus. Also, e-cycling is promoted and the location where electronic materials can be taken is reiterated.

Our Green Future

A brief description of the campaign (2nd campaign):

Every spring, the Sustainability Peer Educator program hosts a week-long educational program called Our Green Future. This program raises awareness about the three pillars of sustainability, and the various sustainability resources available on campus. https://uncw.edu/seahawk-life/services/sustainability/programs/green-future 


A brief description of the measured positive impact(s) of the campaign (2nd campaign):

In Spring 2024, this program reached 391 students, faculty, and staff to engage and educate about sustainability initiatives on campus and how to implement sustainability into daily life.


A brief description of other sustainability-related outreach campaigns:

  • Gold Talon Events is an outreach program designed to raise awareness of the environmental, social, and economic impacts of events held on campus. This program is targeted toward students, faculty, and staff and promotes sustainable alternatives in the event planning process. This year we have partnered with the Advancement Team to certify every single event, including UNCW Homecoming, and educate event goers about sustainable practices like recycling. The Gold Talon Office program engages and educates employees to implement sustainability practices in their departments. https://uncw.edu/seahawk-life/services/sustainability/programs/gold-talon 

  • Dub’s Grocery Run is an outreach program designed to target food insecurity. It offers students an opportunity to learn how to navigate the campus transit system to get to the grocery store.This program teaches tips on being a frugal shopper, navigating grocer’s reward programs, and the ins and outs of public transit.
