Does the institution have an ongoing program that offers incentives for academic staff in multiple disciplines or departments to develop new sustainability courses and/or incorporate sustainability into existing courses? :
Yes

A brief description of the incentive program(s):

The Office of Sustainability allocates $10,000 per year to provide supplemental funding to students, faculty, and staff in pursuit of sustainability projects or research that will further the mission of sustainability at UNCW. Projects can be in any discipline, as long as they promote the pillars of sustainability: economic vitality, social equity, and environmental stewardship. This award is advertised to faculty as an incentive to incorporate sustainability into their classrooms through projects and research.

In the fall of 2023, a faculty member in the Department of Film Studies was awarded a TGIF grant to fund specific equipment needed for his Environmental Filmmaking course. This course was created to introduce students in the Department of Film Studies to the natural world. "In terms of sustainability goals, I created the class with the belief that planting in students an appreciation of the more-than-human world through direct contact with this realm, and allowing student to translate their personal experiences through audio and image, not only cultivates a cohort of environmental stewards but also allows these more personalized
experiences to be translated to audiences through audio/visual media."

A brief description of the incentives that academic staff who participate in the program(s) receive:

TGIF provides grants to employees to advance their sustainability research, which in turn can provide them avenues to tenure and other promotions. There is no set award amount. Historically, awards have ranged from $200 to $5,000.
