All students are allowed to run for Student Government Association position. They are elected by their peers and can participate as long as they maintain a current or cumulative grade point average of 2.5. Members are not allowed to currently be on probation and must not have been deemed ineligible to run or be appointed to office by legislative decree.

The President of the Student Government Association is a member of the University Board of Trustees.

A student will be appointed to committees where student input is applicable. In the past three years students have been on the universities Strategic Plan committee, HUB dining hall committee, implementation of The Green Initiative Fund and the TGIF Grant Committee, and many more. Student Government passes legislation frequently that guides the university in decision making and policy creation.

Staff are able to self-nominate and run and be elected by their peers for a position in Staff Senate.

Non-supervisory staff sit on ad-hoc committees for the universities Strategic Plan and Master Planning committees.The UNCW Staff Senate advises the chancellor and senior officers on issues and concerns that are important to staff and supports the administration in the achievement of the university's mission.

At all time, the Faculty Senate has the responsibility and authority to provide to the administration recommendations concerning the development and implementation of other policies affecting academic life. This requires timely consultation on policies including, but not limited to:
the academic calendar,
salary adjustments,
academic leave,
academic workloads,
allocation of academic positions,
appointment and retention of administrators,
library user services and collection development,
grants and contracts,
academic computer use,
course scheduling,
allocation and use of existing facilities,
transportation and parking,
design and utilization of new facilities,
student conduct and discipline,
faculty welfare including benefits.
