This council makes recommendations to ensure compliance with sustainability laws, regulations, policies, and other commitments, including NC Executive Order 156, UNC System Sustainability Policy 600.6.1, UNCP’s Strategic Plan and Master Plan, UNC Energy Leadership Challenge - Appalachian Energy Summit, Utility Savings Initiative, US DOE's Workplace Charging Challenge, AASHE STARS, the Carbon Commitment (aka ACUPCC commitment) and the Strategic Sustainability Plan.

Sustainability Mission

The University of North Carolina at Pembroke (UNCP) has a long tradition of preparing students to be responsible stewards of the world. Furthermore, UNCP is committed to minimizing its global-warming emissions, while providing educated graduates needed to lead the changes necessary to resolve the world’s social, environmental and economic challenges; in doing so, positioning itself as a regional leader and model for sustainability--academically and operationally.

UNCP Sustainability Council was established in 2014. Since this time the following have been completed through this group with direction and daily management from the Sustainability Coordinator:
-Earned AASHE STARS Bronze rating in 2016
-Signed Carbon Commitment (aka ACUPCC)
-Calculated baseline (FY2013) GHG inventory, FY2014, FY2016 & FY2016 (6% reduction from baseline)
-Partner with US DOE Workplace Charging Challenge (PEV Partner Plan)
-Tree Campus USA for 2015 & 2016 (Tree Care Plan and Recommended Plant & Tree List)
-Food Recovery Network Chapter
-NC 10% Campaign
-Published 2014 and 2015 Campus Sustainability Reports
-First LEED-certified silver building (Health Science Building)
-First Green Globes building pending in 2017
-Reduced energy consumption by 40% per gsf from 2002 baseline
-Established an interdisciplinary undergraduate minor in sustainability
-Partnered with 4 professors to integrate sustainability service learning into each course
-Received Sustainable Sandhills' Green Business Award
-Received $10,000 grant from Duke Energy to install 2 PEV charging stations
-Received $5,000 grant from the Appalachian Energy Summit (AES) for water bottle refill station retrofits
-Hosted the 2016 AES Mid-Year Meeting with over 165 attendees from universities across the state
