UNCP Sustainability Council was established in 2014. Since this time the following have been completed through this group with direction and daily management from the Sustainability Director and Coordinator:
-Signed ACUPCC
-Calculated baseline (FY2013) GHG inventory and FY2014
-Partner with US DOE Workplace Charging Challenge (PEV Partner Plan)
-Tree Campus USA (Tree Care Plan and Recommended Plant & Tree List)
-Food Recovery Network Chapter
-NC 10% Campaign
-Published 2014 Campus Sustainability Report
-First LEED-certified silver building (Health Science Building)

This council makes recommendations to ensure compliance with sustainability laws, regulations, policies, and other commitments, including NC Executive Order 156, UNC System Sustainability Policy 600.6.1, UNCP’s Strategic Plan and Master Plan, Appalachian Energy Summit, the ACUPCC commitment and the Strategic Sustainability Plan.

Sustainability Mission

The University of North Carolina at Pembroke (UNCP), founded in 1887 as a school for the education of American Indians has always prepared students to be responsible stewards of the world. Furthermore, UNCP is committed to minimizing its global-warming emissions, while providing educated graduates needed to lead the changes necessary to resolve the world’s social, environmental and economic issues. In doing so, positioning itself as a regional leader and model for sustainability, academically and operationally.

A brief description of each sustainability officer position:

The Chief Sustainability Officer (Sustainability Director) for the university is responsible for the direction and management of sustainability goals, metrics, programs and progress campus-wide. Lead efforts to integrate sustainability into academics, research and operations while reducing both global warming emissions and operating costs. Oversees the sustainability office staff, interns and contracted employees. Co-chair of the sustainability council and staff advisor for the Greener Coalition.
