Data source(s) and notes about the submission:

Information for this credit was compiled by Dr. Bill Markham, Director of UNCG's Environmental Studies Program. The Environmental Studies Program includes a broad range of content relating to sustainability issues. The introductory course includes sections about environment and politics and environment and economics, and there is a unit on environmental justice. The section on sociology and the environment focuses on how the consumption levels of affluent citizens in developed countries contribute disproportionately to national and world environmental problems and on how the legitimate aspirations of the poorest citizens of these countries for a larger piece of the pie might be accommodated without exacerbating environmental problems. Environmental problems on the international scale
receive considerable attention throughout the course, including discussions of how the politics and economics of the developing world
produce different environmental problems requiring different solutions and consideration of how the policies and economies of developed countries contribute to environmental problems of developing nations. Problems of achieving sustainable development in these countries also receive much attention.

Advanced courses in the program that link environmental issues to the social, economic, and
political aspects of sustainability include:

PSC 312 Environmental Law and Policy (3:3)
PSC 313 Natural Resources Law and Policy (3:3)
SOC 370: Environmental Sociology
SOC 202: Social Problems in Global Context
EC0 380: Environmental and Natural Resource Economics
ATY 450: Anthropology in the Environment
HIS 334: United State Environmental History
HEA 316: Environmental Health
