Environmental Sustainability Working Group addresses: 1) the university's Strategic Plan action to update and implement the University’s climate action plan with a university sustainability design that includes detailed actions at the unit level, oversight from a campus-wide committee and performance indicators with national benchmarking; 2) UNC Sustainability Policy areas of Climate Change & Renewable Energy, Design & Construction, Operations & Maintenance, Master Planning, Transportation, Recycling & Waste Management; and Environmentally Preferable Purchasing; and 3) STARS Operations credits. The Sustainability Culture Working Group addresses: 1) the university's Strategic Plan action to create a culture where all University employees and students embrace their roles for achieving sustainability goals, including regularly scheduled dissemination and celebration processes to keep this topic at the forefront of people’s decisions and actions.; 2) UNC Sustainability Policy area of Systematic Integration of Sustainability Principles; and 3) STARS credits for Academics, Engagement and Planning & Administration.

The Office of Sustainability consists of 5 full-time staff (University Sustainability Officer, solid waste coordinator, assessment coordinator, education coordinator, outreach coordinator) and student interns. It is supported by Business Affairs and currently housed in Facilities Management.

A brief description of the activities and substantive accomplishments of the institution-wide coordinating body or officer during the previous three years:

In the past 3 years, the Office of Sustainability has expanded from 2 staff to 5, and budget increases support more student employees. New responsibilities stemmed from a reorganization of Facilities Management that recognized the need for an campus-wide and long-term perspective on waste management, the need for annual assessments to monitor progress on a new university strategic plan, and more resources for culture change particularly through faculty teaching and staff engagement. In collaboration with the Student Government Association, the university now hosts Student Sustainability Summits every semester.
