A brief description of the institution’s program(s) to encourage student research in sustainability:
The Sustainability Office collaborates with the College of Engineering's undergraduate capstone experience, Senior Design Teams, to address campus sustainability questions. Support for research projects has been provided by the Charlotte Green Initiative (the student green fee committee), the Energy Production & Infrastructure Center, and the Executive Sustainability Committee. The College of Engineering matches students from various disciplines of Engineering to reflect project needs, and university staff serve as the client meeting regularly with student researchers, providing information, and helping with logistics for on-campus studies. In the past 3 years, projects that have been completed include rooftop photovoltaic array designs for 2 large buildings, a feasibility study for converting a heating plant to co-generation of electricity, a feasibility for lighting a campus greenway with onsite renewable energy, a systems model of bicycle traffic and parking, a study to modernize and reduce pollution from backup generators, a study of water bottle filling stations to determine best locations, and a plan for rolling our occupancy sensors across older campus buildings.
