Sustainable Carolina

1.      Reorganized Carolina’s sustainability initiative to report to the Vice Chancellor for Research. Named a tenured faculty member in Earth, Marine, and Environmental Sciences as the Chief Sustainability Officer and Special Assistant to the Chancellor for Sustainability. Established the Carolina Sustainability Council, that includes students, faculty, and staff. The new Sustainable Carolina program, within the Institute for the Environment, is the hub for sustainability on campus connecting operations, academics, and research. The office, composed of four FTEs, produces the Climate Action Plan, Water Plan, and annual Sustainability Report. It also provides internship and capstone opportunities for students. Engagement programs and change management tools for faculty, staff, and students are core elements.

Sustainability Research Funding

Narrative and/or website URL providing an overview of the second featured program initiative, or accomplishment:

1.      Achieved $1.2 billion in total research awards. Health sciences, clean technology, and data science are among the leading recipients. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) awarded $592 million to support game-changing breakthroughs that improve the health and well-being of people and our planet while providing an economic boon to the state of North Carolina. The Department of Energy provided almost $7 million for the Center for Hybrid Approaches to Solar Energy for Liquid Fuels. The Department of Agriculture awarded $5 million to recognize and address maternal warning signs for morbidity during pregnancy and the postpartum period. The Bloomberg Family Foundation awarded $19 million to the Carolina Population Center for the UNC Global Food Research Program, which works to reduce diet-related disparities and create a more healthful food system and food environment with partners around the world.  The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation awarded $5.45 million to the Division of Global Women’s Health within the School of Medicine to improve the health of women in impoverished countries.

NC Collaboratory

Narrative and/or website URL providing an overview of the third featured program initiative, or accomplishment:

1.      Hosts the NC Collaboratory, the only legislatively funded research and development program in the nation tied directly to campuses. Initially focused solely on environmental and natural resource issues, the research now includes public health challenges. The State of North Carolina has awarded more than $150 million in research grants to the NC Collaboratory. Field research is conducted by faculty members at public and private universities throughout the state. Researchers provide time-sensitive health and environmental science and proposed policy solutions to the NC legislature.
