4.1 Sustainability culture assessment design and administration

In October 2023, Sustainable Carolina distributed a Qualtrics survey at the Research Deans and Directors Meeting, obtaining 30 responses. Questions included:

Before today, had you heard of the University’s sustainability plans and goals (Climate Action Plan, Carbon Neutral 2040)? (53% yes/37% no/10% unsure)

How willing or unwilling are you to make changes to your modes of meeting, commuting or research travel behaviors? (43% very willing, 47% somewhat willing, 3% neither unwilling or willing, 7% somewhat unwilling, 0% very unwilling)

Sustainable Carolina is considering developing a new tool for research faculty and staff to help individuals make more sustainable decisions. This tool will collectively make our $1.1B research enterprise more sustainable. How supportive are you of this campus wide initiative. (70% very supportive, 23% somewhat supportive, 7% neither supportive or unsupportive, 0% somewhat unsupportive, 0% very unsupportive)
Description of the institution’s recent sustainability culture assessment findings and any notable trends:
Research Deans and Directors are very (70%) and somewhat (23%) supportive of developoing a new tool to help individuals make more sustainable decisions.
Most of the Research Deans and Directors are also familiar with the University climate neutrality goal.
