Name of a second highlighted sustainability program/initiative/accomplishment:
Grid integrated Solar Storage project

A brief description of the second program/initiative/accomplishment:
A state-of-the-art ground mounted photovoltaic (PV) array that converts sunlight into electricity combined with a battery storage system for any electricity that is not immediately consumed. The project will offset electricity purchases and provide experience with an islandable microgrid. One inverter will be dedicated to new solar technologies developed by researchers on campus. The surrounding landscape will be a pollinator friendly habitat. The NC Botanical Garden received a grant from the National Renewable Energy Lab to develop a tool kit for creating pollinator friendly habitats around solar installations.

Eat Sort Win

A brief description of the third program/initiative/accomplishment:
Volunteer composting concierges assisted campus diners in how to sort discards from retail meal purchases. Diners posted pictures of themselves on social media using composting, recycling, and landfill bins appropriately. Participants were entered into a raffle to win UNC/Duke basketball tickets. Carolina Dining Services and the Sustainability Office partnered on this project in order to reduce contamination of the compost stream. Carolina Dining Services received the Silver Award in Sustainability for Education and Outreach from the National Association of College and University Food Services for this initiative.
