A brief description of the institution’s methodology for evaluating employee satisfaction and engagement:

In January 2018 and again in January 2020, all permanent, full-time employees at UNC-Chapel Hill were invited to participate in the UNC System Employee Engagement Survey. The survey, administered by ModernThink, is part of a five-year project developed by the University of North Carolina System to help achieve the goals of the UNC Strategic Plan, “Higher Expectations.” It also aligns with the goals of the UNC Chapel Hill strategic framework, “Blueprint for Next.”

The survey comprised 60 belief statements that focused on employee engagement, two open ended questions addressing job satisfaction, and 17 questions dedicated to benefits satisfaction. The survey was conducted at all UNC System institutions.

A brief description of the mechanism(s) by which the institution addresses issues raised by the evaluation:

The UNC System Employee Engagement Survey is a five-year project developed to provide metrics toward goals of the UNC System Strategic Plan. Since 2018, each institution in the system has participated in this annual system-wide survey, which helps gauge and enhance employees’ experiences in the workplace.

-- The data collected will establish a baseline metric for engagement to track over the next five years in conjunction with other metrics.
-- This will allow UNC System and individual campus leadership groups to address areas in which employee engagement challenges may exist and to recognize those areas that are successfully fostering employee engagement.
-- The survey results may also assist the UNC System in advocating for improvements to human resources policies at the statewide level that are generally beyond the University’s institutional control.

The goal is to gain clearer measurements for success that will assist us with the recruitment, retention, and development of the most talented and diverse workforce possible — both as a system and on our campus. We want to continue developing a workforce that is prepared to meet the changing needs of the University — a priority in the UNC System Strategic Plan, as well as in our campus’ Carolina Next: Innovations for Public Good plan.

Employees are asked their thoughts about topics like communications, collaboration, supervision and benefits, among other items. The survey is administered by ModernThink LLC, an independent research and consulting firm that specializes in higher education.
