A brief description of the methodology the institution followed to complete the research inventory:

The Sustainability Research Inventory was compiled using a complex and iterative process led by the campus sustainability director. Data was input from multiple sources, including: Sustainability keywords, the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research faculty database, the VC for Research's database of funded research, reports from the Office of Institutional Research and Assessment, and faculty and departmental websites. A list of faculty and non-faculty researchers was obtained from Institutional Research. Clinical faculty from medical disciplines were deleted from the list.
The RAMSeS database at UNC tracks funded research. The names of faculty receiving grants and their research topics are tracked by year. A list of sustainability keywords, developed by the Sustainability Advisory Committee, was used to search the RAMSeS database for research awards made within the past three years. Faculty whose research resulted in multiple hits were included in the inventory. If there were questions about the relevance of the research, further search methods were employed, including website searches. Institutional Research also helped provide an inventory of all research departments, institutes, and centers.
