The annual Golden Modes Awards given by Triangle Best Workplaces for Commuters recognize companies, organizations and people who demonstrate the best use of resources to influence Triangle-area employees’ commute options. Ultimately, they reduce the number of people who drive alone to work, in an effort to reduce traffic congestion and improve our air quality.
Awards are given to individuals and employers.
The Transportation and Parking department at UNC Chapel Hill was honored with the Best Workplaces for Commuters Longevity Award.
Given the density of higher education institutions in the Research Triangle Area, 15 campuses, representing 192,350 students participate actively in this program. Many transportation modes and routes serve multiple campuses that routinely collaborate on a wide variety of programs.

A brief description of the mentoring relationship and activities:
UNC provides mentoring through the General Administration supported Sustainability Alliance that represents 16 higher education institutions across the state. Cindy Shea has presented AASHE STARS workshops for Alliance members, served on the metrics subcommittee, and hosted sustainability representatives from other institutions at UNC's eight hour Making the Workplace More Sustainable Workshops for UNC staff. She has also consulted with many system wide and community college sustainability directors over the phone.

UNC, NC State, and Duke regularly collaborate on a broad range of sustainability initiatives. This includes strategic sustainability planning, professional development opportunities for faculty and staff, campus as a living learning laboratory projects, outreach strategies, local food networks, grant applications, and renewable energy opportunities.
