A brief description of the methodology the institution followed to complete the research inventory (including the types of faculty and staff included as researchers):
Research Inventory Methodology
Researchers: A list of faculty and non-faculty researchers was obtained from Institutional Research. Clinical faculty from medical disciplines were deleted from the list. This resulted in 3065 faculty engaged in research.
The RAMSeS database at UNC tracks funded research. The names of faculty receiving grants and their research topics are tracked by year. A list of 186 sustainability keywords, developed by the Sustainability Advisory Committee, was used to search the RAMSeS database for research awards made within the past three years. Faculty whose research resulted in multiple hits were included in the inventory. If there were questions about the relevance of the research, further search methods were employed, including website searches and emails. After identifying all research departments, institutes, and centers, additional faculty performing sustainability research were identified. In total, 687 faculty were identified as conducting sustainability-related research.
Departments: Data from Institutional Research and online web searches identified 212 departments, institutes, and centers, of which 182 conduct research. Sustainability-related research is conducted by 147 departments.
The percentage of research faculty who conduct research related to sustainability or sustainability challenges is 22%. The percentage of departments conducting sustainability-related research is 81%.
