Sustainability research at UNC is focused on sustainability as it is defined here: "Sustainability is an interdisciplinary field focusing on the dynamic relationship between the environment, economy, and society. Sustainable systems preserve and advance social equity, economic prosperity, and the healthy funtioning of ecological systems now and in the future."

A brief description of the methodology the institution followed to complete the inventory:
The sustainability research inventory was completed by a group of five undergraduate UNC students working on their Environmental Capstone Project. Creating the inventory involved hours of using searchable databases, primarily RAMSeS and Collexis, to sort through UNC research programs to find sustainability related initiatives. The capstone team also used departmental websites and personal contact with UNC faculty to gather information on sustainability research.
