Environmental Science B.S.
A brief description of the undergraduate degree program:
At the University of New Haven, students who pursue the B.S. in Environmental Science seek to investigate and better understand the interconnectedness of living things. This program provides the participants with a solid understanding of biological and earth sciences, chemistry, physics, and mathematics. The required curriculum includes Ecology, Environmental Health, Environmental Effects of Pollutants, and Environmental Law. The coursework is rounded out with six restricted electives that focus on a concentration and may include: Fund Pollution, Sustainable Urban Planning, Global Solutions for Sustainability, Ecology of Sustainability and GIS Techniques.
Environmental Science majors incorporate their classroom knowledge on field research at the University’s 5-acre salt marsh property along Long Island Sound, and lakes, streams, inland wetlands and forest systems. Research is conducted in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, and The Gerace Research Center on San Salvador Island, Bahamas.

Sustainability Studies

The 5-course minor in Sustainability Studies is open to all Majors. Students gain a robust understanding of environmental considerations in industry, government, non-profit’s, and academic institutions. The sustainability focus enhances the participants Major area of study by providing links between science, engineering, mathematics, business, economics, and the humanities. Students are introduced to the core values of sustainability and develop valuable insights around the nature of current sustainability practices. The program utilizes a problem-solving approach to specific institutional, local, and global sustainability issues.
Students select five of the following courses: Contemporary Issues of Art and the Environment, Sustainable Urban Planning, Global Solutions for Sustainability, Research Methods in Sustainability, Environmental & Natural Resources Economics, Introduction Environmental Science, Introduction Environmental Science Lab, Ecology of Sustainability, Introduction to Geographical Info Systems, Environmental History, Environmental Law, Design for Environment, Design for Environment Lab, Intro to Traditional & Alternative Energy.
