Signage
A brief description of the signage that highlights sustainability features on campus:
UNH has signage that prominently features the Sustainable Development Goals and opportunities for students to get involved in sustainability in the Changemaker Hub—a space dedicated to student action and engagement on sustainability issues. (See https://amigraphics.com/blog/project-highlight-unh-center-for-social-innovation-and-enterprise).
In addition, signage across campus highlighting sustainable features like our polllinator garden, green infrastructure for stormwater management, LEED Gold features of James Hall and the Peter T. Paul College of Business and Economics.
Campus sustainability programs and events are also featured on campus-wide digital screens throughout the academic year.
Sustainability map or tour
A brief description of the sustainability walking map or tour:
Several years ago students in our Sustainability Dual Major created a campus sustainability tour as part of a capstone project; it has since been formalized by the Sustainability Institute, and has been deployed flexibly over the past several years. For example:
Sustainability Institute staff and interns have been trained to give the tour and have done so as part of a range of campus events (such as orientation, WildCat Days and Earth Week) and upon request for classes or interested student groups or even individuals.
We adapted it into an on-demand Virtual Tour, which we used very heavily in student engagement and outreach efforts during and after the COVID pandemic. It is available on the UNH sustainability website home page, and has been shared extensively as part of student life programming.
See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rKyb5HMn5TU&list=PL90804966451FEA6B&index=2
More recently we have adapted the Tour into a Scavenger Hunt than can be done physically or virtually--to acccomodate the needs of different particpant groups. Hundreds of students have done the scavenger hunt as part of curricular and co-curricular outreach over the past two years.
In addition, UNH admissions tour staff are trained to incorporate sustainability features and highlights into their campus admissions tours.
Green living guide
A brief description of the guide for green living and/or incorporating sustainability into the residential experience:
UNHSI and Residence Life have collaborated for several years on behavior change and reinforcement campaign with key messages wrapped into regular Res Life staff trainings, as well as newsletters and events.
Residence Life and Housing direct and support students to minimize waste during move-in (when they have a combination of Housing staff and volunteers breaking down boxes in order to ensure reduced contamination among cardboard recycling), throughout the year, and during move-out (when they encourage students to donate belongings to Trash2Treasure program); they run campaigns such as "shorten your shower" and "cut the cord"; they educate students about nutrition and wellness through Healthy UNH programs; and and model skills and behaviors to increase equity, diversion and inclusion across campus.
They've also incorporated the Sustainability Advocates peer-to-peer education program into the structure of Hall Council, to ensure students can get guidance and support on sustainable living directly from their peers.
In addition, the Sustainability Institute provides training to all RA's during thier orientation, in order to ensure that these student leaders can advise all students living on campus about basic sustainable living concepts, as well as how to be involved with sustainbility programs at UNH.
Finally, students living on campus get constant guidance, reinforcement and cues from Campus Dining (https://www.unh.edu/dining/sustainability/what-you-can-do) and Transportation (https://www.unh.edu/transportation/other-services) about sustainable behaviors.
