A brief description of the sustainability-focused immersive program(s) offered by the institution:
UNH has multiple signature programs focused on studying sustainabilty in immersive experiences abroad.
UNH EcoQuest: In partnership with the EcoQuest Education Foundation Te Rarangahau Taiao in Aotearoa New Zealand, the UNH College of Life Sciences and Agriculture is proud to offer two sustainability-focused study abroad programs:
-
- Ecology In Action, an interactive program that immerses students in a rigorous field-based studies in restoration ecology and resource management and environmental policy and sustainability, with opportunities to contribute to local conservation and resource management initiatives. This is a 15-week, 16 credit, 4 course experience, or a short five-week summer course. See https://www.ecoquest.org/ecology-in-action/
- The Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems Aotearoa, a semester-long program that covers systems thinking, agroecology, sustainable land use, environmental accountability, water quality and biodiversity — all elements that underpin the pathways to resilient food systems. See https://www.ecoquest.org/sustainable-agriculture-and-food-systems-aotearoa/
Students of all disciplines may apply to EcoQuest for either the semester or summer program. During each EcoQuest program, 15-20 students are immersed in a rigorous field-based program in New Zealand with a focus on practical skills, conceptual thinking, applied and integrated science and an opportunity to contribute to local conservation and resource management initiatives. Program delivery takes place in a variety of ecosystems, ranging from the mountains to the sea. New Zealand offers an ideal context for hands-on, multidisciplinary studies with its rich cultural traditions, diverse ecosystems, expansive natural areas, mild climate, and history of innovative approaches to resource management. Working closely with an accomplished corps of professors, field leaders, and guest lecturers, EcoQuest students have the opportunity to develop practical knowledge and field skills while contributing to ongoing research efforts to help restore New Zealand's threatened ecosystems. EcoQuest is committed to a sustainable world, a vision that includes the natural environment, as well as the people and their cultural and socio-economic needs.
UNH in Italy: All students who declare the Dual Major in EcoGastronomy must spend a full semester abroad, most likely during their junior year. The University of Gastronomic Sciences (UNISG) in Pollenzo, Italy, serves as the site of this foreign experience. Founded by Carlo Petrini, UNISG is a unique university with a mission "...to create an international research and training center, working to renew farming methods, protect biodiversity and maintain an organic relationship between gastronomy and agricultural science." Dual Majors will complete a series of upper-level core courses at UNISG, such as the history of cuisine and gastronomy, history of food, aesthetics, food law, food technology processes, and Italian language. The overseas program also goes to France. https://www.unh.edu/ecogastronomy/international-experience
ANSC 690 Livestock and Wildlife Management in Namibia: This writing-intensive Discovery World Cultures course combines weekly lectures in Durham, with an embedded faculty-led study abroad component in Namibia over spring break. Students explore the economic, geographic, scientific, cultural and practical aspects of livestock and wildlife management in Namibia, which has for the last few decades been a leader in successful conservation efforts in southern Africa. Understanding community conservation, commercial and communal conservancies, as well as the role of national parks and private land in managing wildlife and livestock is discussed on campus and experienced first-hand in the study abroad component.
For students who want an immersive sustainability experience closer to home, UNH has a partnership with the nonprofit College for Social Innovation that allows UNH students to participate in Semester in the City, to bring undergraduates the opportunity to earn 16 UNH credits while spending a semester in Boston in a rigorous 30+ hour per week internship with a leading social change organization.
