An example of a previous RFP for janitorial services is attached; the contracts are based on the content in the RFP, which includes UNH's sustainability statement, use of "green cleaning" supplies and adherence to waste and recycling programs. In addition, as part of the contracts, sustainability criteria is part of the rubric of the quarterly building evaluations on which contractor performance is scored, as is compliance with the green cleaning policy below:
"Through the use of greener products, more effective cleaners, and precise dispenser systems, UNH seeks to reduce the amount of chemicals use to clean UNH facilities and to provide UNH faculty, staff and students with a healthier, less toxic environment.
Product evaluations shall be conducted using a life-cycle approach to ensure that all significant environmental impacts of a product are considered, from raw materials extraction through manufacturing to use and disposal.
Employees and contractors must be trained in UNH's new zero-waste goals, "green" operational strategies and single-stream recycling policies; adherence is mandatory.
New product and green cleaning training can happen at various times of the year when a new product is introduced by the vendor, or when new information needs to be disseminated to keep staff updated and informed."

UNHs buildings are extensively sub-metered and connected to an online energy dashboard. Conservative set points, aggressive space utilization and optimization policies, and consistent outreach to building occupants about energy conservation and efficiency practices is undertaken as a matter of course.

A brief description of the water management or benchmarking program:
The same comprehensive benchmarking and performance monitoring system that is used to track and manage campus energy usage is also used for water benchmarking and management. We have our buildings metered, and regularly run two types of reports—Variance and Key Performance Indicators (KPI)—to identify issues and opportunities for improvement.
Variance reports are run every month, and are used to track variations in usage. The variance reports compare the current consumption to the previous month, the same month of the previous year, and the average monthly consumption for the previous year. If there is variance above a determined threshold, campus personnel first check the relevant meter reading to ensure it is accurate. If the reading is correct, staff investigate the change in consumption at the building level and identify and implement any needed repairs/adjustments/improvements. KPI reports are used to look for overall trends in consumption and also to compare consumption for similar building types. The “per sqft” comparison and facility ranking allows us to easily identify buildings that are underperforming, and to target those as we undertake planning, capital improvements, and the like.

The dashboard is a tool for transparency, engagement and education that allows anyone who is interested to see current and historical water (as well as energy) consumption data—in terms of both gallons and the financial cost—in every building, by building type (i.e. Residential vs Academic/Administrative), and for the campus as a whole.
