A brief description of the institution’s methodology for evaluating employee satisfaction and engagement:

Institution conducts a survey or other evaluation that allows for anonymous feedback at least once every five years to measure employee satisfaction. The survey or equivalent may be conducted institution-wide or may be done by individual departments as long as all departments are covered by a survey. The institution has a mechanism in place to address issues raised by the evaluation.


A brief description of the mechanism(s) by which the institution addresses issues raised by the evaluation (including examples from the previous three years):

• During the fall of 2011 the President’s Commission on the Status of People with Disabilities conducted an employee survey focused on the prevalence of, and climate for, employees with disabilities. 700 people (17%) responded to the survey aimed at helping to guide programming and policy initiatives in the coming years. The results were shared with the campus community, President’s Cabinet, and Administration. The UNH Survey Center was utilized for conducting and collecting the data and results can be found at http://www.unh.edu/cspd/statistics

• Between May 17 and June 6, 2012 the President’s Task Force on Workplace Flexibility conducted the Workplace Flexibility Survey for Employees utilizing the Unh Survey Center to conduct the survey and compile the data. 432 surveys were received yielding a response rate of 37%. The results shared with the campus community, President and Administration and were used to guide changes to policies in order to support flexible workplace arrangements (flexible work hours, teleworking, flex year, etc.), as well as the development of a formal process and education programs on the topic launched March 2013. • In October, 2013 UNH employees (2,727) were surveyed on workplace bullying. The initiative was the work of the employee councils: Operating Staff; Professional and Technical; Lecturers; and Extension Educators. 542 employees responded yielding a 20% response rate. The UNH Survey Center conducted and compiled the data. Participants were asked to indicate if they experienced certain incidents and how they responded to those incidents including reporting. • In January, 2014 all 2013 new employee hires were surveyed on their onboarding experience, as well as satisfaction with benefits offered and UNH as an employer. All employee groups were surveyed: 338 new hires with 170 responses for a response rate of 44%. Survey results indicate 99% satisfaction with benefits, 91% satisfied with the recruiting process, 85% found their onboarding effective, 99% reported they made the right choice coming to UNH and 98% would recommend UNH to others as an employer.

• Faculty and staff at UNH participated in an online survey in February and March of 2009 in an effort to discover areas where UNH is doing well as an employer and to identify areas to improve. Baird Borling Associates were contracted to conduct the survey and provide an analysis of the results. A total of 303 faculty and 1,394 staff completed the questionnaires (30% of faculty and 61% of staff). The survey included an overall 7-point satisfaction rating, which revealed that both faculty and staff were above the norm based on results from 30 institutions nation-wide. Other items that faculty and staff were surveyed for included coworker/collegial relations, supervision, work itself, benefits/medical services, university communications, working conditions, senior leadership, management of diversity, workloads, rewards and recognition, interdepartmental and upward communication, and management of change.
