A brief description of the themed semester, year, or first-year experience:
The UNH discovery program facilitates a theme throughout the year to focus community events and conversations on an area of broad interest a big question or an enduring problem requiring the efforts and knowledge of multiple disciplines and perspectives. The theme for the 2009-2010 academic year is “Taking Care of Self and Community: A University Dialogue on Health.” The following is a description of the Dialogue provided by the UNH Discovery Program. “Throughout the year you will have opportunities to learn, both inside and outside of the classroom, about health. Moreover, leaders and practitioners and consumers who are deeply engaged in U.S. health care reform will visit campus. There will be movies and discussion events, and opportunities to participate in health-related topics where you live, eat, and play. We invite you to engage as part of a community in these events and we challenge each of you to form, confirm, or reshape your values about how you will live your lives forward as healthy human beings. Here’s to your health!” Recent sustainability-related themed academic years include: 2005-2006: Where in the World is UNH? A University Dialogue on Globalization. 2006-2007: Power to the People: A University Dialogue on Energy. 2007-2008: We Hold These Truths: A University Dialogue on Democracy 2008-2009: The Growing Divide: A University Dialogue on Poverty and Opportunity.
