UNB's Student Union is a collection of students elected by their peers to impact university policy. The President of the Student Union sits on the institution's Board of Governors to help facilitate student concerns having effect on the university's operations.

Two members of the Senate are elected by and for part-time instructors and librarians. There are also academic administrative staff members who serve as ex-officio members of Senates, such as the Registrar and the Assistant Vice-President (Student Services). There also are several staff members with specific technical expertise who provide advice and support to committees of the Board. Subject to the bylaws and procedures put in place by the relevant selection body, it may be possible for a staff member to be appointed by other means, such as through the Associated Alumni/ae or as a member appointed by the lieutenant-governor in council.

There are 6 faculty members elected to the Board by their peers. Each of our academic Senates includes representatives elected by and from their Faculties and faculty members elected at large. In addition, the faculty members elected to serve on the Board also serve on the Senate for their home campus (Fredericton or Saint John). The total number of positions for elected faculty members on our academic Senates must equal the number of all other positions, except for the position of the Chair which held by the President.
