A brief description of the institution’s community garden:

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln manages community gardens with the Growing Together Nebraska program at the West Central Research, Extension, and Education Center (WCREEC) in North Platte and the Backyard Farmer Garden (BYFG) on UNL's East Campus. At both gardens, volunteers with the Nebraska Extension Master Gardener Volunteer (NE-EMGV) program manage, grow, and harvest produce to increase access to fresh, local produce for families and individuals who are food insecure. The Backyard Farmer program also operates a 'Grow a Row' program where home gardeners can dedicate a row of their home garden to be donated to local food pantries. The Backyard Farmer program provides information on best practices to help guide these community gardeners to be successful. In 2022, community gardens through the WCREEC Growing Together Nebraska project and the BYFG produced 1432 pounds (local gardeners donated 245 pounds) of fresh produce. https://food.unl.edu/growing-together-nebraska https://news.unl.edu/newsrooms/today/article/growing-together-nebraska-provides-food-education-across-cornhusker-state/

Additionally, Community garden plots are available to UNL faculty, staff, and students with a valid Ncard. Plots are located south of the College of Law Building on East Campus. Registration for plots occurs annually around the end of March and available for a fee of $15 or $30 depending on lot size. https://newsroom.unl.edu/announce/snr/4198/23709
