A brief description of the method(s) used to gather data about student commuting:
A random sample of 9,000 UNL faculty, staff, and students was used for this survey. The University Registrar provided a sample of 2,677 on-campus students and 4,323 off-campus students. Four thousand undergraduate students and 3,000 graduate students were sampled to allow for results by student type. The proportion of on-campus students sampled was proportionate to the proportion of on-campus students for undergraduates and graduates respectively.

A brief description of the method(s) used to gather data about employee commuting:
A random sample of 9,000 UNL faculty, staff, and students was used for this survey. Human resources provided a sample of 1,000 faculty members and 1,000 staff members. The number of faculty from each college were selected based on their proportion of faculty overall. For staff, 500 office/services staff and 500
managerial/professional staff were sampled, so data could be analyzed by each type of staff.
