Spring 2015
University of Nebraska-Lincoln students wanted to increase their capacity to make UNL more environmentally friendly, and creating a student green fund was a great way to do this. As part of a campaign to gain student support, during the ASUN elections, a survey question was placed on the ballot asking students if they would support a fee increase of up to $2 per semester to create a green fund in order to support student projects related to sustainability.
Spring 2016
ASUN Senate unanimously approved an amendment to the ASUN bylaws outlining the green fund’s operations and fee structure. Senate recommended that a $1 per semester student fee should be collected to support the green fund.
Fall 2016
The UNL Student Green Fund officially started collecting fees and began funding student-led projects to improve overall campus sustainability.
Spring 2017
In the first semester that the Green Fund was officially in operation, a total of 5 out of 6 project proposals were funded, along with this major changes to the structure of the funding and selection process were debated on in the student senate allowing for a more streamlined process in the future.
A brief description of the multi-stakeholder decision-making process used to determine which projects receive funding through the sustainability projects fund:
he Green Fund Selections Committee (consisting of 7 students), with the advising help of the Sustainability Coordinator and an advisory committee of subject matter experts, will make recommendations to senate for approval regarding which applications should receive funding.
