Greeks Going Green

A brief description of the student educators program (1st program):

Greeks Going Green is a Recognized Student Organization and was founded in 2019 after being a program sponsored by Student Government since 2014. It was founded to focus on implementing sustainability initiatives in different Greek houses while making recommendations for improvements based on where the individual house is at. Fraternity and Sorority chapters select a Green Rep to be trained and supported by the Environmental Sustainability Committee in outreach, education, and behavioral change. The Green Reps teach good habits to their chapters such as energy and water conservation, recycling, alternative modes of transportation, and more.

A brief description of the student educators program’s target audience (1st program):

Members of Greek chapters apply to be a "Green Representative". Each chapter can have up to 2 green reps. Once you are a green rep, you are a member of Greeks Going Green. While only Green Reps and people who have served in this position in the past can be members of Greeks Going Green, any chapter members interested may attend meetings to see what is going on sustainability-wise in the Greek community. We will also have a few open forum meetings so that anyone in the community can come see what is going on.

A brief description of the student educators program (2nd program):

Sustain UNL is a student organization on campus focused on creating a sustainable world through activism, education, and service-engagement. This organization has over 50 members that are committed to engaging UNL students in sustainability through 5 committees each focused on a certain sustainability topic. The #PutAPriceOnIt committee focuses on educating campus about carbon pricing as a solution to climate change; the Balloon Ban committee focuses on educating campus on the impact of mass balloon releases and facilitating a campus wide discussion on alternatives to the Husker football balloon release; the Divest NU committee focuses on educating campus about the relationship the University of Nebraska has with the fossil fuel industry and why divesting from the industry is in our best interest; the #LightsOutUNL committee educates campus on how to reduce energy use on campus specifically in the dorms; and the EMBRACE committee is focused on building a social movement for climate action on campus and in the community. All 5 of these committees works hard to engage our whole campus with sustainability topics throughout the whole academic year through hosting events, tabling around campus, petition drives, and our weekly meetings.
