A brief description of the methodology the institution followed to complete the research inventory:
The Office of Sponsored Programs pulled data on active researchers (grants awarded) at UNL on behalf of the Office of Sustainability. A master list for the year calendar year 2019 was created highlighting all the research projects that were awarded grants.
A search (using SQL and Tableau) on this list for distinct count generated the headcount of total number of employees that conduct research at UNL in 2019. From this subset, using the keywords listed below, a distinct employees count was generated to find the employees engaged in sustainability research.
A search on this list for distinct count generated the total number of academic departments that conduct research. Using the keywords that match sustainability research, a subset of departments that include at least one employee that is engaged in sustainability research was found.
Keywords included: ecology, environment, sustainability, natural resources, resilience, carbon, climate, social justice, diversity, land, air, water, drought, recycle, agriculture, conservation, biology, food, energy, nature, plants, soil, solar, wind, planning, financial, equity, engagement, efficiency, ecosystem, atmosphere, atmospheric science, behavior, biodiversity, biomimicry, LEED, community, life, life-cycle, and resources.
