The Plan Big masterplan recognizes the differences between the campuses water usage and outlines different goals for each. City campus is a heavily populated urban setting whereas East campus has greater opportunity for restoration strategies. Each campus has the greatest goal to reduce wastewater runoff. Strategies on City campus include reducing impervious surfaces, capturing and conveying storm water along campus valleys, and increasing porous pavements. East campus is located near a prominent natural floodway, and water management plans include restoring natural drainage channels to clean water as well as reduce flood risk. UNL also actively plans to maximize irrigation water usage by using timers, rain shutoff valves, and high-efficiency heads, as well as prioritizing drought-resistant plants in landscape planning.
