Established in 2015, the Office of Sustainability acts as a liaison and common resource for initiatives within the NU campuses and community to create a culture of faculty, staff and students who are socially, economically and environmentally responsible. The Sustainability Office has been a key factor in establishing initiatives such as UNL's Green Fund and the Sustainability Summit which works to unify the work of all environmental groups on campus.

UNL hired its first Sustainability Officer in August of 2013, and the Officer was the most influential for the establishment of the Office of Sustainability in 2015. The Officer has been responsible for initiatives such as Go Green for Big Red, coordinating the implementation of the Green Fund student fee and working on overall energy reduction projects at the University.

The Director of Sustainability was first appointed in 2014 and is responsible for facilitating initiatives within the UNL community that have goals to become more socially and environmentally aware. This position entails correspondence among various student, faculty and maintenance projects as well as reporting and advocating for Sustainability to the University's Chancellor and corresponding parties.

Assist in annual recycler’s survey; tracking of recycling drop- off program; assist in market research for selected recycled materials; assist in developing educational materials for specific recycling programs; assist with environmental awards and earth day activities; coordinate internal office paper recycling program; work with student groups promoting recycling activities on campus.
