The University of Nebraska system instituted a system-wide Sustainability Summit in 2022 in which UNO participated in Lincoln, NE, and served as host in November of 2023. In connection with the summit, there were local featured institutions and organizations in Omaha, a coordinated exhibit in the Library, and strong campus participation through a student sustainability fair. This was extended through active participation in the Green Omaha Coalition observance of Earth Day in April of 2024, including new tours of campus sustainability projects.

As an urban institution, we seek to make every part of our footprint meaningful and have established vegetable garden plots in the center of campus to support our food pantry with fresh produce, rain gardens to control run-off, and an indigenous garden to honor and support our campus Indigenous community with ceremonial space and appropriate plants.

In 2023 the student government instituted free bicycle passes coordinated with Heartland Bicycle sharing across the city of Omaha to connect with the free public transit provided as well.
