A brief description of how and when the cultural assessment(s) were developed and/or adopted:
Every two years, the Sustainability Survey is sent to all members of the UNO community asking questions pertaining to sustainability awareness, general familiarity, knowledge, and self-reported behavior. In addition, the survey is used to gauge support about the direction the campus community would like to see happen on campus in regards to sustainability.
The results of the survey are tabulated to determine UNO's Sustainability Index. The Sustainability Master Plan has a goal to have our Sustainability Index be 75% by 2030.

A brief summary of results from the cultural assessment:
In 2021, the index score for our Sustainability Engagement Survey (SES) was 53, and increase from our previously reported figure within STARS, but a decrease from our SES in 2019. Changes in the dimensions can be found in the included attachment. To note, results from this survey were impacted by the disruption to campus life and operations due to COVID-19.
Awareness of UNO Sustainability efforts - decrease from 2019 to 2021
Knowledge of sustainability, generally - significant increase 2019 to 2021
Sustainability behavioral frequency - decrease from 2019 to 2021
Perceived norm of sustainability behaviors (of others) - slight increase 2019 to 2021
Familiarity with sustainability - decrease from 2019 to 2021*
* This questions changed to better capture knowledge of the complexity of sustainability concepts
Other noteworthy results include:
- Mode split. UNO achieved a 60.4% mode split, which meets its 2030 goal of 60%. However, the gains made were largely due to employees
and students working and studying remotely due to the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.
- 95% of the campus agrees that it is important for UNO to take active steps towards being more sustainable
- 92% of the campus believes that UNO should be a community leader for sustainability
