The institution has employees that represent the University serve on the city's Green Commission and who help revise and create the city's Sustainability Plan, which guides public policy for sustainability issues, legislation, and ordinances in the City of Alliance that align with UMU's sustainability goals. The plan is periodically revised and passed to City Council for approval.

The University has put resources towards enabling students to register to vote and to contact officials. There are Civic corners located around campus where students can register to vote and contact their government representatives.
