A brief description of the undergraduate degree program:
The environmental science major at Mount Union is an interdisciplinary program where students complete an in-depth experience in a traditional area of science, an interdisciplinary breadth experience and four integrative experiences which tie together the sciences and the humanities. The program seeks to develop environmentally informed professionals and citizens who can contribute to responsible environmental management and who possess leadership, teamwork and problem-solving skills.

The sustainability minor at Mount Union answers a global need for more well-researched professionals in this academic discipline that is no longer simply a hobby. The program equips undergraduate students with the understanding of the ethical, practical, and innovative approaches used to balance the need for human consumption and development with environmental, economic, and social equity.
Regardless of job title, the work of all sustainability professionals focuses on the intersection of environment, economics, and social and cultural issues, or what’s referred to in the business world as the “triple bottom line” of people, profits, and planet.

The minor includes the same three CORE courses as the MAJOR, in sequence as they become more advanced, and two additional courses in a depth field (Biology, Chemistry, or Geology) The Minor is more popular than the major and many students choose it to complement their intended career path such as green business, or environmental communications.

Minor Peacebuilding and Social Justice

A brief description of the undergraduate minor, concentration or certificate (3rd program):
The peacebuilding and social justice program at the University of Mount Union is an interdisciplinary program grounded in the humanities and drawing from the social sciences and other academic realms. Students engage, analyze, and work to resolve messy, overlapping, and complex interpersonal, community, and international conflicts, consider and implement creative, nonviolent, and sustainable solutions drawing upon the expertise and perspectives multiple academic perspectives. They will leverage their interdisciplinary training and disciplinary expertise to prevent conflict and to act as makers and sustainers of peace and justice at home and abroad, in their homes, workplaces, and communities. The minor provides an excellent complement to nearly any academic major and with the program’s commitment to theoretical understanding, practical skills-building, and engagement with diversity so as to prepare students for graduate work and/or careers in law, education, counseling, business, the not-for-profit world, social service and many other fields.
