Sustainability Research (revised based on committee input 12/20/2010)

Research in the area of sustainability is defined as interdisciplinary investigations that study the relationships between the environment, economy, or society. The goal of sustainability research is to improve understanding of those relationships thereby improving the utilization of natural, financial, and human resources. This will allow the present generation to meet its needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs .

Examples of Sustainability Research
- study of algae growth and potential to harvest alternative fuel bio-oils from it
- model the economic impact of a low cost water purification system
- analyze the social risks and benefits associated with city rooftop gardens

Negative Examples of what would not be considered Sustainability Research
- develop a new low cost synthesis of aspirin
- analyze the affects of commodity utilization in China
- study the correlation between depression and teen suicide rates
