This year we cosponsored the Sustainable Alliance Festival, September 24 - October 4, 2010.
The Festival included a tour of the university facilities and faculty panel on the topic of sustainability across the curriculum. See events listed below in Notes public.
Mount Union also participates in the RecycleMania competition. To promote this event, we are planning a series of recycling themed events, such as a display of one week's worth of recycleables on the quad, recycling olympics, and a recycled fashion show.

Sustainable Alliance Festival
EVENTS: Sept. 24 - October 4, 2010
FRIDAY, Sept. 24
WALL-E – In a futuristic world, human beings have destroyed Earth and evacuated the planet, leaving the cleanup to an army of robots theyʼve programmed to do their dirty work. Due to a mishap, the dutiful WALLE is the only one left. Rated ʻthe best film of 2008ʼ – as one reviewer remarked: “Brilliant, funny, touching,
charming…donʼt miss this one.” We agree; this is a kid-friendly movie, so bring the family! (rated G). Mount Union Theater, 7 p.m.
SATURDAY, Sept. 25 –
SARTA Hybrid Bus – Tour the new hybrid bus and receive information on how to travel throughout Stark
County on SARTA. Farmersʼ Market, Main and Mechanic, 9 a.m. – noon.
Historical Bike and Vintage Bus Tour – Tour downtown historical sites with guides on a vintage bus or on your bicycle. Call the Chamber of Commerce at 823-6260 to make a reservation. Tour begins at the
Farmersʼ Market, Main and Mechanic, at noon and at 1:30 p.m.
Huston-Brumbaugh Nature Center - Saving the Future: The National Ash Seed Collection - Learn to
identify local ash trees and the Emerald Ash Borer and how to collect seeds to help save the trees.
Reservations required (330-823-7487). Located east side of Rt. 183, 6 miles south of Alliance, 1 - 3 p.m.

Huston-Brumbaugh Nature Center - Family Games – Enjoy nature-oriented outdoor games.

MONDAY, Sept. 27 -
SARTA Travel Training – Have you ever wanted to use SARTA public transit, but did not know the first
thing about it? SARTAʼs new Travel Training program provides personalized instruction for individuals or
groups who would like to learn how to plan trips, and use the fare box on an actual bus. Receive a free
monthly pass at the end of the hour-long training session. All ages welcome. University of Mount Union,
Hoover Price Campus Center, West Room, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.
Tree Planting - Co-sponsored by the University of Mount Union and the Alliance Shade Tree Commission. University of Mount Union, noon.
Alliance Leadership Seminar on Sustainability Planning - Join Mayor Toni Middleton, University of
Mount Union President Richard Giese and a panel of experts on sustainability planning. Alliance Area
Preservation Society Awards will also be presented. Glamorgan Castle Board Room, 7 p.m. Tours of the
Castle will be available at 6 p.m. for a donation of $5.00.
Rain Gardening Workshop – Discover the benefits of having a rain garden and how it helps your area
water. Learn how to create one in your own backyard. Presentation will include deciding on a location,
siting and sizing, creating a layout, planting ideas and maintenance. Presenter: Elaine Regas, a Certified
Master Gardener. Beech Creek Botanical Garden & Nature Preserve, 11929 Beech St. NE, Alliance, 7 p.m.
Dirt! The Movie - “A story with heart and soil” - a funny and educational movie about the importance of the earthʼs living skin. University of Mount Union, Bracy Hall, lower level, 7 p.m.
WEDNESDAY, Sept. 29 –
GLOBE Workshop – Global Learning and Observation to Benefit the Environment - featuring Nancy
Baker-Cazan, currently the Master Trainer for the Stark County GLOBE Program. The workshop is geared to 4-H and Scout leaders, community organizations and students interested in focusing on meaningful science research activities. Beech Creek Botanical Garden & Nature Preserve, 11929 Beech St. NE, Alliance, 6:30 – 8:30 p.m.
THURSDAY, Sept. Faculty Panel - Sustainability Across the Curriculum - featuring Beth Canfield-Simbro, Martin Horning,
Ivory Lyons, and Naoko Oyabu-Mathis, faculty members, who will discuss how the concept of sustainability
plays a role in their disciplines. In the process, they will specify how they are integrating the concept into
one of their courses in the coming year. University of Mount Union, Tolerton Hood, Room 100, 4 – 5 p.m.
FRIDAY, Oct. 1 -
EcoART: celebrating and exploring sustainability - This event will feature the work of local artists and
art students, ʻTrashionʼ fashion show at 4:00, a display of re-purposed fabric and fiber by the YWCA, live
music and a silent auction of rain barrels. Jupiter Studios, 346 E. Main Street, 4 – 10 p.m.
SATURDAY, Oct. 2 -
Ohio Proudʼs Kitchen-on-Wheels – Join Chefs Dorsey Ney and Dawn Wagner, RD/LD, for a seasonal
cooking demonstration. The menu will include items provided by Ornery Goat Dairy, Tri Pine Farm, Maize
Valley Farm, and Arrowhead Orchard. Three demonstrations are scheduled. Free samples available.

Watershed Tour - Join Dr. Dean Reynolds to learn more about how Alliance processes its water and about
the natural resources of our area. To register, call Alliance Area Senior Center at
821-3348. The SARTA bus tour will depart from the Senior Center, 602 W. Vine St., at 1 p.m.
Ohio Solar Tour – Stark County - Approximately 10 local sites featuring solar, wind, geothermal, green
design and energy-saving technologies. Open house tours throughout Stark County. For sites, maps and
details, visit: www.GreenEnergyOhio.org. From 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
SUNDAY, Oct. 3 -
Fall Harvest Festival - Food, music, raffles, 2nd chance books and more. The event will also feature
displays and discussions of sustainable practices in the home, ways to dispose of leftover medications, and
a history of bus transportation in Stark County. Food will be available for purchase. Alliance Area Senior
Center, 602 W. Vine St., 11 a.m. - 2 p.m.
Ohio Solar Tour – Stark County - Approximately 10 local sites with open house tours throughout the
county featuring solar, wind, geothermal, green design and energy-saving technologies. For sites, maps
and details, visit: www.GreenEnergyOhio.org. Special exhibition with demonstrations and technical
representatives available to answer questions at University of Mount Unionʼs McPherson Academic &
Athletic Complex, 480 W. Hartshorn St., 1 – 4 p.m.
