Name or title of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
Green roofs at the new Campus Mil

A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:

Fully inaugurated in 2020, the new Campus Mil of the Université de Montréal has been designed to meet sustainable development goals, as demonstrated by its achievement of Leed Gold certification.

Among the sustainability features implemented, two green roofs span nearly 800 square meters above the Science Complex at the MIL Campus. One extends over the classrooms in the Teaching Pavilion and the other over the loading docks.

On the one hand, with more flora and fauna, they promote biodiversity in the area. On the other hand, they contribute to the reduction of urban heat islands and to the reduction of the energy balance of the Science Complex. They also contribute to the retention of rainwater in order to prevent it from being redirected to the sewers. Finally, they contribute to the aesthetic signature of the construction project in the landscape.

The University opted for "extensive" green roofs, i.e. light roofs with a thin growth substrate, allowing for plants with a fairly weak root system. This type of roof, in addition to being more affordable, requires less complex maintenance.

The choice was made to plant different varieties of succulents (Sedum) which are very easy to maintain. These succulents, which thrive in the sun, are ideal for rooftops. They require little watering, are very drought tolerant and frost resistant. During the winter, they go into a dormant period.
