A brief description of the methodology used to complete the course inventory :

Important note: the Universite de Montreal's 2022 statement for AC1 credit only targets courses that are directly or indirectly related to sustainable development.

-d-DD : sustainability focused;
-i-DD : sustainability-related (or sustainability-inclusive).

Also, the level of courses are identified as the following:
-1CYC: undergraduate
-CSUP: graduate

The EDI criteria-based course analysis conducted in 2019 has not been neither renewed nor updated. Therefore it does not figure in our 2022 report.

1. Methodology
Methodology for identifying sustainability courses
The title and description of courses that may include sustainability content were analysed through a process that detected the presence of specified keywords from a predetermined list of term or abbreviation developed to this end. A sorting was, afterward, performed according to the output:
a. The courses with negative output (does not contain at least one of the term or abbreviation in their title or descriptive) were identified as such and weren’t analyzed further.
b. Those with positive output, but without any sustainability content, were qualified as “false positive” after being identified visually.
c. The courses with a positive output with visually confirmed sustainability content were sorted as “sustainability-focused” or “sustainability-related” accordingly to STARS criteria (AASHE, 2019).
Since the methodology was verified and approved, through its output, by the professorial community (including Faculty and department members) in 2016, no consultation about the identified list of sustainability courses was done.

2. Courses considered
Some courses have been excluded from the total number, in respect with the criteria of STARS, considering the lack of stability in content or the absence of specific topics. The following courses were specifically targeted trough keyword search and visual identification:
a. PhD Comprehensive Examination
b. Internship
c. Practicum courses
d. Research project
e. Thesis presentation courses (Master and Ph. D)
f. Directed study courses/special topic course/directed reading
g. Seminar courses
h. Stage
i. Methodology courses

3. Keyword lists
Three lists of keyword were developed to be able to discriminate the courses that may contain some component of sustainability from those who don’t; courses with EDI-related content; and courses to be excluded.
The sustainability content and exclusion analyses were done using regular expressions (Regexp) using R studio (RStudio Team (2018). RStudio: Integrated Development for R. RStudio, Inc., Boston, MA URL http://www.rstudio.com/.). For transparency reason, the list here contain both the keywords and the syntax used.
The EDI-related content analysis was done using SQL queries. For transparency reason, the list here contains both the keywords and the syntax used.
