The information above is based on the annual report to the Commission des Normes, de l'équité, de la santé et de la sécurité du travail (CNESST; Norms, Equity, Health and Security at Work Committee) which requires the use of the calendar year. The performance year represents an average of the three last years and the baseline was selected accordingly to the AASHE STARS technical manual (v.2.1).

A brief description of the institution’s workplace health and safety initiatives, including how workers are engaged in monitoring and advising on health and safety programs:

The Direction de la prévention et de la sécurité - Division santé et sécurité au travail (DPS-SST; Workplace Health and Security Division), according to its goal to ensure a quality living environment for all persons working or who is studying at the Université de Montréal, has the mission to eliminate potential dangers for health, security, and physical integrity for all staff and students.

More explicitly, the DPS-SST :
1. Develops health and security prevention programs for the University community;
2. Ensures the application of laws, regulations, standards, and institutional policies on health and safety;
3. Acts as an expert on institutional committees and represents the University of regulatory bodies;
4. Plans a response in emergency cases involving hazardous materials by defining intervention procedures with the Office of Safety and external emergency services, providing professional support to those involved by intervening directly on site to ensure the safety of people, facilities, and the environment;
5. Implements a management program for hazardous and recyclable waste.

Since the workplace health and security is a shared responsibility, each actor has a role to play.
The administrator must:
1. identify risks and define ways to eliminate or reduce them;
2. implement corrective or preventive actions to eliminate or control the risk of injuries or accidents;
3. take the necessary means to compel staff or students under his/her supervision to follow the safety rules.
Employees and students must :
1. take the necessary steps to protect their health, safety, and physical integrity as well as those of the people in their workplace or study by applying the guidelines and procedures or using equipment individual and collective protection to eliminate the risk or reduce it to an acceptable level.
2. report to their manager any situation or concern risk to health and safety.
