UM Environmental Education Program

A brief description of the institution’s featured program, initiative, or accomplishment:
Founded in 2019, the UM EE Program was created to better connect K-12 and public audiences with University of Montevallo's unique but underutilized ecological/sustainability resources: Ebenezer Swamp Ecological Preserve, the UM Organic Community Garden, and the James Wylie Shepherd Observatory. UM students can work in the program to gain valuable and relevant job experience, and students in the nearby areas can experience nature in their own community.We have also obtained multiple grants to make our summer and field trip programs accessible to title 1 schools and students who qualify for free and reduced lunch.

Second Point of Distinction

Name of a second highlighted sustainability program/initiative/accomplishment:
UM Green Fund

A brief description of the second program/initiative/accomplishment:
The UM Green Fund is pool of money used to provide grants for campus projects that improve sustainability, decrease our ecological footprint, and educate the
university and local communities about sustainable practices, environmental issues, and caring for the planet. The Green Fund has $30,000 available per year.
Any member of the UM community, including students and student groups, can write a Green Fund grant proposal. UM was the first college in Alabama to have a Green Fund, and it was created by student petition.

Third Point of Distinction

Name of a third highlighted program/initiative/accomplishment:
UM Organic Community Garden

A brief description of the third program/initiative/accomplishment:
UM students and community members can rent plots at the UM Organic Community Garden. Seeds, plants, soil amendments, and hand tools are available. We also host volunteer groups, field trips, u-pick events, and more. All produce grown in the main garden plot is donated to Shelby Emergency Assistance for local families in need.
