Has the institution conducted a survey or other evaluation that allows for anonymous feedback to measure employee satisfaction and engagement during the previous three years?:
Percentage of employees assessed, directly or by representative sample:
A brief description of the institution’s methodology for evaluating employee satisfaction and engagement:
An electronic survey is sent biennially to all employees at UM. The survey is co-administered by the Office of Organizational Learning and Development (OOLD), the Institutional Data Office, and the Office of Strategic Planning and Implementation (OSPI). A paper survey was also offered to staff who do not regularly have access to computers. The information gleaned from the survey was shared with the Board of Regents and University Leadership Council. A PowerPoint presentation given to the University Leadership Council on the results of the survey are included below.
When the survey was conducted in 2023 it received a 43% response rate (969 respondents out of 2252 employees). It was sent to full-time and part-time employees. The results were shared with UM leadership and compared to the 2021 results.
UM uses an employee engagement scale developed by Shuck, Adelson, and Reio (2017) that is attached below.
A brief description of the mechanism(s) by which the institution addresses issues raised by the evaluation:
The results of the survey are compiled each year by the staff and faculty senate leadership in collaboration with the Office of Organizational Learning and Development (OOLD). This team summarizes the findings of the assessment and generates recommendations that are shared with the President and the President's Cabinet.
The 2023 survey offered really positive results! UM employees report very high engagement and job satisfaction. "Workload" was cited as the primary reason for those individuals who said they had looked at other employment opportunities outside of UM
As mentioned in our Sustainability Planning credit, UM currently has Priorities for Action (PACs) instead of a standard Strategic Plan. One of the PACs is "Mission First, People Always" and has a designated working group that is assigned the task of making progress on that PAC. The survey results are loaded into Tableau for this group so that they can see it in "dashboard" form and track progress.
In addition to our own internal survey, UM participates in the Great College to Work for Survey every year as well. There are not publicly available results of that survey, but we choose to participate because it allows us to compare ourselves to other universities.
