Since 2021, the University of Montana has made notable and intentional investments to support Indigenous students, build stronger ties to tribal colleges and communities, and increase Native student enrollment. Below are a few of the actions taken to support our mission of "inclusive prosperity."

  • Hired a Tribal Relations Specialist to conduct outreach across tribal communities on behalf of UM and increase Native student recruitment
  • Secured a grant to bring Indigenous knowledge keepers/elders to campus and the community to build cultural awareness around Indigenous ways of knowing
  • Secured a grant to hire a Director of Community Belonging, Inclusion, and Resilience – this role will be dedicated to both UM and the community and will work with organizations on things like policy review to help ensure a healthy workplace environment. This role was co-designed by UM and members of the Missoula community’s JEDI Network, which includes City and County representatives.
  • Secured a grant to hire a position in ELCS that will be dedicated to working with Native students as they pursue meaningful careers and to connect them to work experiences in Missoula businesses and nonprofits
