A brief description of the institution’s green athletics program:
Beginning in 2013, UM began hosting one "Green Griz" football game per season. Now, in 2024, we provide recycling and compost at multiple home football games each fall and use our first home game of the season to identify our 'baseline' waste footprint for the season. We employ a team of 3-6 student Zero Waste Ambassadors to work large events like football games. This year these ambassadors also oversaw the ZW efforts at 3 summer stadium concerts -- Pearl Jam, Tyler Childers, and P!NK, diverting over 50% of the materials generated during these events.
For each home football game, ASUM Transportation a free shuttle for attendees and widely promotes this option of getting to the stadium over driving solo.
All concessions sold during home football games are managed by UM Campus Dining. This means that we have transitioned to compostable single-use products with the exception of individual sauce packets. Aluminum canned water is provided by our Coke distributor so that no plastic is sold in the stadium.
