Does the institution host a food bank, pantry, or equivalent resource focused on alleviating food insecurity, hunger and poverty among students?:
A brief description of the food bank, pantry, or equivalent resource:
The UM Food Pantry first opened its doors in February of 2019 in response to findings from a student-led Committee on Basic Needs and Food Insecurity. Since 2019, the food pantry has morphed into Bear Necessities, a department within the student government that not only provides food to those experiencing food insecurity, but also information on renters' rights and support applying for state and community resources like food stamps, WIC, and subsidized housing. Bear Necessities works with the student government and other student-led groups on campus to provide services, education, and outreach. They also partner with the Missoula Food Bank & Community Center, Montana Food Bank Network, Missoula Chamber of Commerce, and others in the community to organize food & donation drives, events, and fundraising campaigns.
The food pantry provides free food assistance to UM students, staff, faculty & community members, free personal care products, and SNAP application assistance.
