During the 2023 Montana legislative session, the Montana University System (MUS) advocated to change the eligibility requirements for Indigenous students seeking Montana university waivers. Prior to HB 288, Indigenous students only qualifed for tuition waivers if they have “one fourth Indian blood or more” or are enrolled members of a federally recognized tribe. All eligible students also need to have established residency in Montana for at least one year before joining the Montana University System. HB 288 aims to remove blood quantum requirements and opens tuition waivers to Native students who have had Montana residency for at least one year.
