A brief description of any internal sustainability professional development and training opportunities that the institution makes available to non-academic staff:

In partnership with the Office of Organizational Learning and Development (OOLD), the Office of Sustainability hosts multiple professional development opportunities each year, including two lunch-and-learns and two online webinars in the past two years.

  1. The first Lunch & Learn was a sustainability trivia event where we educated participants on general sustainability topics applicable to employees through trivia. Sustainable prizes were awarded to winners. https://grizhub.umt.edu/event/8498789
  2. The second Lunch & Learn was a presentation given by Tayli Hillyard from the Office of Sustainability and Amanda Wikoff from the Marketing & Communications department about Sustainable Swag. They presented on how to choose better outreach materials (or none at all!) and walked participants through a goal sheet to help them determine if/what kind of swag they may need for an event. https://grizhub.umt.edu/event/9043940
  3. The first sustainability webinar of 2023 was on electrification. Joe Rosenberg from Rewiring America presented and hosted a Q&A session on electrification and the Inflation Reduction Act. https://grizhub.umt.edu/event/9043959
  4. The second webinar of 2023 was on recycling and plastics. Two presenters from different perspectives on recycling and circularity presented about where our recycling goes, the harms it can cause, and more. https://grizhub.umt.edu/event/9584329

All of these events were developed with UM employees in mind and content was curated either for the purpose of sharing ideas for how to integrate sustainability into existing work responsibilities (like the 'sustainable swag' program) or to meet an interest/need identified by UM employees that relates to making more sustainable choices at home and in the workplace. The events were all specifically marketed to UM employees and 'take aways' were summarized at the conclusion of the trainings in order to support integration of the new information into employees' work and lives off campus. At the conclusion of the events, participants are asked to complete a short survey to inform future workshops and trainings as they are with all OOLD workshops.

A brief description of any external professional development and training opportunities in sustainability that are supported by the institution :

All staff have been provided with a subscription to LinkedIn Learning. There are thousands of courses on this platform, many of which have sustainability content. The Office of Organizational Learning and Development has curated several sustainability-themed trainings and shared those with UM employees.
