A brief description of the employee educators program (1st program):
Building upon the Green Office Program (2019-2022), the Office of Sustainability established a new program to increase employee engagement in sustainability. This new iteration of the Green Office Program is called the "Sustainability Sentinels" and was launched spring 2024. Sentinels attend monthly 2-hour workshops and are expected to share information on these workshops with their fellow colleagues. The Office of Sustainability and the Sentinels then lead discussions in staff meetings, share information through emails/newsletters/social media, and set goals to improve their office and personal sustainability efforts. The Office of Sustainability continues to administer and support this program by creating and managing shared resources like a shared folder with sustainability content, presentation templates, and tracking worksheets as well as a Teams group for the Sentinels to stay connected and share the work they are doing.
A brief description of the employee educators program’s target audience (1st program):
Each year, the Office of Sustainability puts out an open call for participants in the program. In spring 2024, we had 20 employees participate in all of the events and workshops. The OoS solicited participation from several departments on campus that historically have low participation in sustainability on campus in order to recruit new people to our sustainability efforts. All Sustainability Sentinels programs (trainings, workshops, field trips) are open to anyone on campus and are advertised widely. An expectation of program participation is that each Sentinel will invest several hours outside of the group trainings and workshops offering education, outreach, and engagement within their department. What this looks like varies widely depending upon the department in question, but could include offering sustainability updates during departmental meetings, adding content to a sector newsletter, working with OoS to conduct a waste/materials audit, etc.
