A brief description of the methodology the institution followed to complete the research inventory:

UM reported 663 total individuals conducting research in 2021 after communicating with the Office of Research and Creative Scholarship. ORCS shared the names from all of their research listservs that they manage and the Office of Sustainability eliminated duplicate names. In our 2024 submission, we are reporting significantly fewer total researchers because ORCS has since implemented UM IMPACT, a database of current research being conducted by UM researchers that offers a more accurate number than we had in 2021. The listserv names/emails (2021's primary data source) include everyone who opts in to receiving those communications (most of whom do research but not all) and most individuals who attend the Principal Investigator (PI) trainings (again, most but not all). Additionally, the listervs get cleaned up infrequently and so contain names/emails of potentially retired PIs who no longer conduct research on behalf of UM.

In 2024, the Office of Sustainability worked with the VP for Research and Creative Scholarship to generate a master list of researchers at UM using the UM IMPACTS database. Our staff removed names of former/retired employees as of spring 2024 and duplicates, identified each name by their department and research, and totaled the list. Then, using a combination of keyword searches and our curriculum/research survey results, we identified those researchers whose work is related to sustainability. UM IMPACT also has the ability to label research by its UN Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) connections, so we used that filter as well. Our spreadsheet has three tabs: the first is a total of all researchers from the UM IMPACT database; the second tab includes all individuals whose research pulled from the UM IMPACT database was labeled with one or more SDG; and the third is the cleanest version that was reviewed to make sure the sustainability connection was clear and the researcher still works for UM. We also added the researcher's department to the information provided.
