Documentation

A copy of the institution’s inventory of its sustainability course offerings and descriptions:
Do the figures reported above cover one, two, or three academic years?:
One

A brief description of the methodology used to complete the course inventory :
  • Office of Sustainability (OoS) staff obtained a list of all courses taught during the fall 2023 and spring 2024 semesters including online-only, graduate/undergraduate, Missoula College, and those courses affiliated with external-to-UM programs (like nursing)
  • We removed duplicate courses (multiple sections of English 101, for instance), independent studies, internships, recitations, and clinical experiences from our 'total classes' list
  • We used a combination of self-reported course labels from faculty from a faculty survey on teaching and research AND a search of the course catalog for sustainability-related key terms. Using those two methods to create a comprehensive list of possible sustainability-related courses, our staff sifted through each course to check if it was current (had been taught in the last 2 years) and if it did in fact meet our sustainability-focused or -inclusive criteria. We used a combination of course catalog descriptions and OoS-generated descriptions to write the course descriptions included in our inventory.
  • We removed the same course types from our sustainability course list as we did for our 'total courses' list (independent study, recitations, internships, etc.).
  • Classes were then labeled as 'UG/G' and totaled
  • Using the list of academic departments/programs from the Provost's Office, OoS labeled each course with its corresponding host department and cross-checked that list with sustainability courses to determine the # of departments that offer sustainability courses

How were courses with multiple offerings or sections counted for the figures reported above?:
Each course was counted as a single course regardless of the number of offerings or sections
